Managed & Cost Effective Portable Appliance Testing in all areas of Devon & Cornwall. City & Guilds Inspection and Testing qualified. Electrical Safety HSE Guidance on Electrical Safety Electricity can kill. Each year about 1000 accidents at work involving electric shock or burns are reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Around 30 of these are fatal. Even non-fatal shocks can cause severe and permanent injury. Shocks from faulty equipment may lead to falls from ladders, scaffolds or other work platforms. Those using electricity may not be the only ones at risk: poor electrical installations and faulty electrical appliances can lead to fires which may also cause death or injury to others. Most of these accidents can be avoided by careful planning and straightforward precautions. These are examples taken from the Health and Safety Executive. An employee received an electric shock that broke both shoulders A worker received a 240 volt electric shock whilst using a pressure washer An employee received a fatal electric shock whilst examining a faulty air conditioning unit An employee tried to apply insulating tape to a live electric cable and received an electric shock What are the hazards? The main hazards are: contact with live parts causing shock and burns (normal mains voltage, 230 volts AC, can kill); Faults which could cause fires; Fire or explosion where electricity could be the source of ignition in a potentially flammable or explosive atmosphere, e.g. in a spray paint booth. (in an area where dry materials are stored or used) Insurance Claims Many insurance companies will assume you are taking the appropriate precautions with regard to having your appliances tested on a regular basis. If an accident should happen due to a poorly maintained appliance and a claim is made there is a strong possibility that your insurance company will not pay out and should the HSE be involved and you could also be heavily fined and prosecuted. Don’t take the risk. By booking your PAT today you are ensuring you are complying with the regulations, leaving you with one less thing to worry about
